Cumbrian Society of Organists

Review : Organ Music for Services : 26 October 2019

Seven members, plus friends, enjoyed a most informative afternoon at Wigton courtesy of David Shingler, the organist of the church, and his nephew, also called David Shingler. Under the title of “Organ Music for Services” we heard fine performances of thirteen short pieces suitable for playing before, during and after a service. Four of the pieces were for manuals only, including a sparkling Toccata by Froberger expertly performed by David T. Shingler who later played us one of his own compositions, a beautifully-crafted Verset for Lent. Other composers featured included J S. Bach, Boyce, Elgar, Ogden, Rawsthorne, Rutter, Whitlock and Wadely.

The 1912 Harrison organ in the church was a delight and the pieces chosen showed both the full range of tone colours available and also the subtlety and power available from what is a fairly modest instrument. Refreshments were provided after the presentation and members were free to explore the organ for themselves. The whole event was a real treat and grateful thanks are due to both Davids for the care they had taken with the preparation of the music and also to the ladies who kindly provided the welcome tea, coffee and biscuits afterwards.
